'The Baldwin' 10-12-D Class Tramway Locomotive

This is a model based off the Baldwin Locomotive Works 10-12-D class. Built for the British War Department Light Railways to haul supplies and troops on 2 ft military lines in France in World War I.

Almost 500 were produced and after the war many were sold off to light railways and industry in Britain, France, India and beyond, with several preserved today on heritage lines like the Leighton Buzzard and Welsh Highland railways.

A Baldwin made its way to the Glyn Valley Tramway, acquired in 1921, regauged to the tramway’s unusual 2 ft 4¼ in track and nicknamed “The Baldwin” by crews. Unlike the line’s original Beyer Peacock tram engines, it was never fitted with tram skirts. It mainly hauled mineral trains but was considered rough-riding and derailed a number of times. Sadly, in the end, like all the GVT’s locomotives, it was scrapped after the line closed in 1935.

The story of "The Baldwin" gave some inspiration to the Rev. W. Awdry and he created the character of Stanley for his famous Railway Series.
